Objective of my reform:
I, Elihu Burritt, hope to bring peace to America and to other countries around the world. There is no reason we need to be at war with one another. For we were all created equal, from God’s image and we need not fight. I hope to end slavery as well. In the Declaration of Independence it states that all men are created equal and have the right to pursue happiness. What happiness can be pursued when one is forced to work in harsh conditions for another. By bringing peace within America, tensions that have built up between the south and the north will cease. Once America can be at ease and unite as a nation, they will be able to be peaceful towards other nations. This will ultimately result in world peace.
Previous Work:
At the age of sixteen, I was an apprentice to a Blacksmith. I then pursued that trade. I established a weekly journal in Worcester, MA called the Christian Citizen. It is meant to educate Americans on the views of self-reliance, anti-slavery, and peace. I have been a leading peace advocate abroad and started the League of Universal Brotherhood.
Schooling:
When my father died, my brother Elijah and I took out education upon ourselves. I am completely self taught. During my first few years as a blacksmith, I studied languages in depth. I mastered Spanish, German, Latin, Italian, and Greek. I can also read in over fifty languages. I was offered by the governor of Massachusetts to go to Harvard, but I refused.
References:
William Ladd- I helped him with his ideas in his “Essay on a Congress of Nations”. I helped him gain support for his plans. I became his successor because we both have the view: peace is a required world movement.
